Declan Carville visits P5
Primary 5 were very lucky today to get a visit from children’s author Declan Carville. Declan talked to the children about the books he has written and the thought processes involved in writing a book. Declan gave us his top tip which is to write about something you know. He told us he was homesick which is how ‘The magic harp’ came about to be written. He spoke to the children about how the author and illustrator always appear in his books and asked the boys and girls to find them in his stories. He showed them illustrations and talked to them about the wallpaper that is found at the beginning and the end of the book.
Declan then along with the children planned the second story ‘ Fergal’s second wish’ using sentences and pictures. He explained the importance of reading and rereading your work as you are writing a story. Some children then got the opportunity to be illustrators and create pictures for our story sequel.
A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, thank you to the AmmA creative learning centre for helping to facilitate this workshop.
Take a look at our pictures.
