Fr Nicky’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations
Today, we welcomed Fr Nicky, a past pupil of St. Colman's Primary School, to our whole school assembly to mark his golden jubilee celebrations. Fr Nicky has spent the past 50 years working in east Africa with the St Patrick's Missionary Society, known as the Kiltegan Fathers. He is preparing to return to his work in Mombasa at the end of this month, where he has spent the past 12 years and where he first arrived as a young priest in 1973. We were honoured to present Fr Nicky with a cheque for £500 towards his work in Kenya. We are extremely proud to have a close link with such a remarkable priest who continues to make huge a difference in the world.
The teachers and children also introduced our new class plants to the school. Each plant has been carefully chosen by the children in each class and careful consideration has been given to their names. Research has shown that working with plants reduces pyschological and phsiological stress and improves wellbeing. When children are calm and more relaxed, it makes learning easier. We feel this is an excellent reason to use gardening and plants as part of the curriculum.
We prayed and sang together and enjoyed music from some children on the tin whistle. We wish Fr Nicky all the best on his return to Africa.
