A Giraffe-ic World Book Day in P1! 🦒

6th Mar 2025

Our Primary 1 children had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day 2025! This year we encouraged everyone to get cosy with a good book, so we ditched the costumes and opted for comfy clothes and reading fun—and what a success it was!

Our book of choice for the day was Roald Dahl’s The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, a story full of adventure and imagination. After reading the book together, we took our learning outside on a character and code hunt, searching for hidden clues inspired by the story. We even created our own secret codes using chalk!

Back in the classroom, creativity was in full swing as we:

  • Painted giraffes inspired by the story
  • Made sweets from playdough and built our own sweet shop
  • Drew pelicans and explored their fascinating features
  • Practised writing codes using pictures and symbols—just like in the book!

A real highlight of our World Book Day celebrations was the special collaboration with our P7 buddies. Earlier in the week, our wonderful P7s surprised us with the news that they were writing personalised e-books—one for each P1 child! Each P1 pupil had the chance to choose a character for their story and today, the P7s returned to read their finished books aloud. It was a beautiful moment of teamwork and storytelling, showing the power of reading, writing, and friendship.

To make World Book Day even more exciting, we had a very special visitor to our class, Siobhan Hawthorn. Siobhan is a real-life zookeeper from Emerald Park and mum to our very own Cillian!

Siobhan treated us to a fascinating morning, sharing all about her amazing job and the animals she cares for. Since she specialises in birds, she brought along a collection of feathers from different species and explained how each bird is unique. She also taught us about enrichment—the fun ways zookeepers keep animals busy and happy. One of the most exciting parts was seeing her special glove, used to protect her arm from sharp bird talons—a reminder of how exciting but dangerous her job can be!

The children were full of questions, and we loved making connections to our World Book Day story, The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me. A huge thank you to Siobhan for bringing her passion and knowledge into our classroom. It was a morning to remember, especially for Cillian, who was so proud to have his mummy with us!

World Book Day 2025 in Primary 1 was a truly magical experience, filled with stories, creativity, teamwork and special memories. We are so lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community.
